Brussels/Sofia, Sept. 1 -- A plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was struck by GPS jamming over Bulgaria on Sunday.
Officials have alleged that Russia was the perpetrator of the incident, forcing the aircraft to circle for an hour before landing safely in Plovdiv.
The European Commission confirmed the incident, saying it occurred as von der Leyen began a four-day tour of European union nations bordering Russia and Belarus.
"We can indeed confirm that there was GPS jamming," said commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta.
