New Delhi, Oct. 7 -- Following multiple child deaths reported in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, allegedly due to the consumption of contaminated cough syrups, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an independent, court-monitored investigation and a comprehensive overhaul of India's drug safety framework.
The petition, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, urges the Supreme Court to constitute a national judicial commission or expert committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to conduct a thorough inquiry into the manufacture, testing, and distribution of toxic cough syrups found to contain diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) - industrial chemicals known to cause fatal poisoning.
