Aizawl, April 4 -- The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Mizoram has taken a serious turn with the cumulative number of pig deaths crossing the 1,000 mark. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department officials on Friday confirmed that a total of 1,043 pigs have died since the fresh outbreak was detected on March 20.

According to officials, a staggering 343 pig deaths in Siaha town, the district headquarters of Siaha district in southern Mizoram, had gone unreported until Thursday. These deaths occurred across 20 localities, and it is suspected that the outbreak began spreading in the area during the latter half of March.
