New Delhi, July 22 -- Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) also known as "forever chemicals" which are used in many everyday items ranging from nonstick cookware, stain-resistant furniture to waterproof clothing may significantly raise the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), as per a first-of-its kind study.

Using data from over 70,000 patients, a team of Mount Sinai researchers had conducted a nested case-control study, comparing blood samples from 180 recently diagnosed T2D patients with 180 matched individuals without diabetes. Results revealed that higher PFAS levels were associated with a 31% increased risk of developing T2D.
