Guwahati, Dec. 18 -- A BJP legislator in Assam has landed into controversy after a writ petition was filed in the Gauhati High Court raising questions about his citizenship status.
Two petitioners - Braja Gopal Sinha and Bijoy Kumar Kanu - have alleged that Ratabari (SC) MLA Bijoy Malakar, who was elected in the last assembly elections in 2021, is not an Indian citizen.
The petitioners through their counsel Advocate Abdul Karim Azad argued that Malakar and his parents entered Assam after the cut-off date of March 25, 1971, making him ineligible to hold public office under the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
