Kolkata, Oct. 31 -- Amid SIR controversy in Bengal, a petition has been filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking a court-monitored Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state.

The plea, admitted today by a division bench comprising Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Smita Das De, urges the court to oversee the SIR process and extend the time period allotted for the revision exercise.

The petitioner has also requested that the court direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to submit a detailed explanation justifying the need for conducting the SIR.

Earlier this week, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced the SIR exercise across 12 states, including West Bengal.
