Mexico City, April 16 -- The Criminal Court of Peru said on Tuesday that it had sentenced the country's former president, Ollanta Humala, and his wife, Nadine Heredia, to 15 years of imprisonment over illegal presidential campaign financing.

"The Third National Collegial Criminal Court sentenced Ollanta Humala and Nadine Heredia to 15 years in prison after finding them guilty of money laundering," the court said in a statement.

The former president and his wife also have to pay a fine of $670,000, Peruvian media reported from the courtroom. Heredia's brother was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while four other defendants were handed sentences of five to eight years, according to reports.
