Tokyo, June 10 -- Leakage of personal information in Japan has hit a massive high, with over 21,00 cases of information security breaches reported in 2024, according to the annual report of a government panel on Tuesday.

According to the Personal Information Protection Commission's report adopted by the cabinet, the number increased 58% from the previous year, highlighting inadequate protections in the public and private sectors.



Of the 21,007 reported cases, 19,056 were linked to the private sector, a 57 pc jump from fiscal 2023.



Meanwhile, public sector data leaks rose to an estimated 68% with 1,951 cases reported, with many involving human error, such as mistaken issuance or delivery.
