Aizawl, July 14 -- A high-level advocacy initiative set up under the direction of Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma to mediate between rival Chin rebel factions has so far failed to yield a peace breakthrough in western Chin state, where violent infighting continues to plague the resistance movement.

A source closely involved in the process said today that repeated attempts by the Advocacy Group for Peace in Chinland, based in Aizawl, to facilitate dialogue between key Chin armed organisations have not succeeded due to deep-rooted mistrust and shifting battlefield dynamics.

"Whenever one side is under pressure, they express interest in talks. But the moment they gain the upper hand, they walk away from the table," the member noted.
