Panchanganga river water level rising rapidly amid heavy rains in Kolhapur
Kolhapur, Aug. 19 -- The water level of Kolhapur district's main Panchanganga river continued to rise rapidly following four to five consecutive days of heavy rainfall, particularly in the western tehsils of Gaganbavda, Shahuwadi, Radhanagari, Chandgad and Ajara. Rainfall has also intensified in the catchment areas of all 14 irrigation dams in the district.
With the persistent downpour, the Panchanganga overflowed its banks for the fifth time this year. As many as 80 bandharas (weirs), including Rajaram, Survey, Rui, Ichalkaranji, Terwad, Shirol, and Shignapur were overflowing. Water levels of other rivers, including Bhogavati, Kumbhi, Kasari, and Tulshi, also rose sharply, breaching their banks at several rural locations.
