Islamabad, Feb. 2 -- Pakistan's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose 27.55 percent in January as compared to the same month a year ago when it was recorded at 12.96 percent, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said Wednesday.

The CPI in January also witnessed a year-on-year rise from December as it went through an increase of 24.5 percent in the previous month, according to PBS.

Reportedly, this is the highest inflation reading in the South Asian country since the 27.8 percent recorded in May 1975.

According to economists, food inflation has been the main factor that drove the recent rise. It increased from 162.23 in January last year to 231.89 in January this year, a rise of up to 43 percent.
