Hamirpur (HP), Feb. 14 -- More than two-thirds of antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily in the hill state, said Dr Naresh Purohit, Advisor to the National Communicable Disease Control Programme.

Responding to reporters after addressing a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme for healthcare professionals on Saturday, organised by the Solan-based District Tuberculosis Centre, noted epidemiologist Dr. Purohit said many healthcare professionals prescribe antibiotics to patients who do not actually need them.

An Executive Member of the Federation of Hospital Administrators, he stated that far too many antibiotics are prescribed for viral infections or conditions not linked to infections at all.
