Shimla, Oct. 13 -- The Himachal Pradesh Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department has identified around 40,000 ineligible beneficiaries who were fraudulently availing themselves of subsidised rations under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Below Poverty Line (BPL) schemes.

Officials said the large-scale irregularities were unearthed during a comprehensive verification drive aimed at ensuring that government welfare schemes reach only genuine beneficiaries.

During scrutiny, the department found that thousands of individuals with landholdings and incomes well above the prescribed limits had managed to obtain BPL and Antyodaya ration cards by misrepresenting their details.
