New Delhi, July 22 -- The Lakhpati Didi initiative, a key rural development initiative of the government, has empowered more than 1.48 crore rural women to earn an annual income of at least Rs lakh, with Maharashtra emerging as the top performer, with 22.69 lakh women from Self-Help Group (SHG) households.

The state is followed by Andhra Pradesh, with 17.41 lakh women, and Bihar, with 14.47 lakh. Other leading states include Madhya Pradesh (12.85 lakh) and West Bengal (11.60 lakh), as per the data tabled by the Union Rural Ministry in Lok Sabha today in connection with the progress of the Lakhpati Didi initiative, which aims to economically empower rural women through SHG-led livelihood activities.
