Mumbai, June 30 -- Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray declared the Maharashtra government's withdrawal of controversial Hindi language directives resulted from overwhelming public and opposition pressure, as the state legislature's monsoon session commenced today.
Thackeray joined opposition legislators in a symbolic "Mi Marathi" (I am Marathi) protest on Vidhan Bhavan steps, hours after the session began.
The protest followed Sunday's Cabinet decision to revoke two government resolutions (GRs) implementing a three-language policy requiring Hindi instruction for grades 1-5. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis simultaneously announced an Education Committee. chaired by Narendra Jadhav,to re-evaluate language policy.
