Srinagar, Oct. 29 -- Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today accused the Omar Abdullah government of "betraying" poor people by rejecting a private member's bill on land rights introduced by her Peoples Democratic Party in the J&K Assembly.

"Omar betrayed the poor people whose roofs he now wants to take away," Mehbooba told reporters.

Yesterday, the National Conference and the BJP for the first time in the assembly jointly defeated the PDP's proposed "anti-bulldozer bill," which aimed to grant ownership rights to locals who have been occupying state-owned land illegally for over 20 years. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly opposed the bill saying such a move would set a dangerous precedent.
