Bhubanewswar, April 29 -- A vigilance court in Odisha's Sundargarh district on Wednesday sentenced a retired junior engineer to two years of rigorous imprisonment for embezzling government funds meant for labourers under a welfare scheme.

The convict, Anup Kumar Das, was found guilty of misappropriating public money during his tenure by inflating work records related to pond excavation under the Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS). Investigations revealed that he forged signatures and left thumb impressions of beneficiaries on muster rolls to siphon off funds.
