Odisha: Doctors successfully save preterm baby with rare congenital condition
Bhubaneswar, April 25 -- In a remarkable feat of neonatal and surgical care, doctors at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) in Bhubaneswar, have successfully saved a preterm baby weighing just 1,520 grams, born with complex congenital anomalies.
The baby, delivered at 33 weeks of gestation, was diagnosed with Pierre Robin Sequence, a rare condition occurring in approximately 1 in 14,000 live births.
The baby was born with a significantly underdeveloped lower jaw, which caused the tongue to be displaced downward, leading to a life-threatening upper airway obstruction. In addition, the baby had a cleft palate, further complicating both breathing and feeding.
