Guwahati, Sept. 19 -- Acclaimed singer, composer, actor, and director Zubeen Garg was a towering figure not only in Assamese culture, but one of the best-known and loved cultural icons in India's north-eastern region and even beyond.

A heartthrob of the younger generation, Zubeen, who gained nationwide fame for his Bollywood hit "Ya Ali", has left behind a legacy of soulful music that touched millions.

Zubeen died today in Singapore, where he had gone to serve as the cultural brand ambassador for the Northeast India Festival.
