Washington, June 25 -- A record 59,000 people have been detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since US President Donald Trump took office, the CBS News broadcaster reported, citing internal government data.

According to the federal statistics, almost half, or 47%, of those currently in ICE custody have no criminal record, and less than 30% have been convicted of crimes, the report said on Tuesday.

The report noted that ICE does not have enough beds to accommodate all those detained.

The previous record number of people arrested by ICE dates back to 2019 and Trump's first term, when 55,000 people were detained by the agency, the report added.
