Bengaluru, Sept. 24 -- Noted Kannada novelist S L Bhyrappa, one of India's most acclaimed literary figures, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 94 due to age-related ailments.

Bhyrappa died at Rashtrotthana Hospital in Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, on Wednesday afternoon. A long-time resident of Mysuru, he had been unwell for several years and was living at the Bengaluru residence of journalist Vishweshwar Bhat for the past year.

Born on July 26, 1934, in Santeshivara village, Hassan district, Bhyrappa overcame a childhood of poverty, as detailed in his autobiography 'Bhitti', to become one of the most widely read authors in Kannada.
