Mumbai, Jan. 8 -- Noted environmentalist Dr Madhav Dhananjaya Gadgil, who founded the Centre for Ecological Sciences, a research forum under the aegis of the Indian Institute of Science, breathed his last on Wednesday night, in a Pune hospital after a minor illness, at the age of 83.
He is survived by his son and daughter. His last rites were performed on Thursday at 4 pm at the Vaikuntha Smashan Bhoomi electric crematorium in Sadashiv Peth, Pune.
Gadgil was awarded the prestigious 'Champion of the Earth' award in 2024 as well as honoured with the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Padma Bhushan in 2006.
