Mumbai, July 31 -- In a landmark verdict concluding a 17-year legal saga, a Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mumbai today acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case.
The acquitted include former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and retired Indian Army officer Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit.
Presiding Judge A.K. Lahoti delivered the verdict, emphatically stating that punishment cannot be founded on mere suspicion.
The court found the application of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) unjustified and declared all evidence presented by the prosecution unreliable, ultimately honouring the acquittal of all accused.
