New Delhi, July 16 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of two tragic incidents involving the drowning of minor children in Delhi and Greater Noida last week, raising alarm over the evident negligence of public authorities in ensuring basic safety.

In Delhi, a 4-year-old boy tragically lost his life after falling into an open drain in the Mahendra Park area of North-West Delhi. The NHRC noted that various reports suggest that the city has witnessed numerous such fatalities in recent months, with victims succumbing to similar hazards posed by open drains and manholes.
