Kendrapara, Aug. 14 -- The family of an Odisha worker has received Rs 6 lakh as compensation on August 12 following the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The NHRC's directive came in response to a petition filed by human rights defender Sagar Kumar Jena of Kendrapara.

Jena had drawn the Commission's attention to a news report published on May 17, 2024, detailing the death of migrant worker Sanjay Swain of Benupali village, Kendrapara district. Swain died on May 16, 2024, while working in a spinning mill at Surat, Gujarat.

The petitioner stated that Swain had been the sole breadwinner of his family and had worked for 12 years as a cotton worker at the Pandesara Sonal Industrial Society in Surat.
