New Delhi, Oct. 7 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Principal Secretaries of the Health Departments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, following the reported deaths of 12 children after allegedly consuming spurious cough syrup.

The Commission acted on a complaint highlighting serious lapses in drug safety and regulatory oversight. A Bench led by NHRC Member Priyank Kanoongo took suo motu cognisance of the matter, said a statement issued here.

The complaint referred to incidents in Chhindwara and Vidisha districts of Madhya Pradesh, and several districts in Rajasthan. It alleged that the children died after consuming contaminated cough syrup.
