Shimla, June 24 -- Himachal Pradesh government today made news reading mandatory during morning assemblies in government schools across the state.

In a notification issued during the day, the Education Department said the directive follows Chief Minister S S Sukhu's instructions, aimed at improving students' general awareness and communication skill

This move comes after the Chief Minister's recent surprise visit to Government Senior Secondary School, Baga Sarahan in Kullu district, where an interaction with government school students left him disappointed, as they failed to give correct response to questions relating to current affairs.
