New Delhi, Aug. 18 -- India is ramping up its efforts to eliminate rubella, a contagious disease affecting mainly infants and children, with a goal to meet the regional target by 2026.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Nepal has successfully eliminated rubella as a public health problem, according to the World Health Organisation.

This is a big achievement for Nepal, announced by the global health agency today.

In a statement here, Dr. Catharina Boehme, WHO Officer in Charge for South-East Asia, praised Nepal's success and said it shows the strong commitment of the country's leaders, health workers, volunteers, and informed communities who all worked together to protect babies and ensure a future free from rubella.
