Windhoek, March 24 -- Namibia's National Olympic Committee (NNOC) and Commonwealth Sports President, Ndeulipula Hamutumwa, on Monday hailed the election of Kirsty Coventry as the new head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Hamutumwa said in a statement that the development is a landmark moment that promises increased support for African nations and more minor sporting powers like Namibia.

"This is a proud moment for Africa. With Coventry's leadership, we anticipate more investment in sports development that will benefit the entire continent," he said.

According to Hamutumwa, Coventry's election as IOC president is a defining moment for the sport.
