Nagpur, Oct. 1 -- A 70-year-old retired superintendent of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) in Nagpur lost Rs 21 lakh after falling victim to a "digital arrest" fraud, where cyber criminals posed as Mumbai Police and Enforcement Directorate officials, police said today.
The complainant received a video call on August 9 from a man identifying himself as Sandeep Roy from Colaba police station, accusing him of involvement in terror funding. Despite his denial, the caller demanded Aadhaar and property documents for "verification".
Subsequently, the victim received WhatsApp messages containing fabricated documents bearing the logos of Mumbai Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
