Kolkata, July 14 -- Nabanna in Howrah today turned into a veritable fortress as thousands of riot police, equipped with batons, shields and tear gas shells stood guard around the state secretariat to prevent the march of the dismissed untainted teachers and non-teaching staff demanding their reinstatement in the state aided schools across the state.

Official sources said the police already began to control traffic by restricting movement of vehicles and the riot police erected guard rails and put up barricades in all the entry points to the state secretariat where chief minister Mamata Banerjee has an official chamber.
