Guwahati, July 23 -- Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the Muslim population will be close to 50 percent in Assam in a few years' time.
The chief minister made a comparison between the population of Muslims and Indigenous Muslims in Assam taking the 2011 census and said that by 2041 the Muslim population in Assam will be close to 50 percent.
"As per the 2011 census 34 percent of the population is minority. In Assam the indigenous Muslims constitutes 3 percent of the population. This clearly indicates that about 31 percent of the Muslims are those who migrated to Assam," he said adding that this statistics, if projected on the 2021, 2031 and 2041 basis, the Muslim population by 2041 will be close to 50 percent.
