Mumbai, Nov. 5 -- Mumbai Police have arrested a serial chain snatcher preying on women shopping in various supermarkets and cracked two hitherto unsolved theft cases based on his confession, officials said today.
The thief identified as Bapi Ratan Bhattacharya, is a habitual offender who has earlier been arrested in connection with a spate of robberies in crowded shopping areas, especially popular D-Mart outlets. His modus operandi was to discreetly lift purses and bags placed in shopping trolleys. Most of his victims were women distracted while shopping.
Investigators revealed that the accused had been involved in more than 10 similar thefts across various supermarket branches in Mumbai and nearby areas.
