Mumbai, Sept. 8 -- A 75-year-old woman was killed and 53 people were injured after a major fire broke out in a high-rise residential building in suburban Dahisar East today.
Officials said over 40 residents trapped on the upper floors of the building, located in New Jankalyan Society, Shanti Nagar, were rescued.
The deceased was identified as Shanti Bachole Gosai (75). She was found unconscious on the first floor and was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
The injured were admitted to the government-run Shatabdi Hospital and several private hospitals nearby. The condition of three to four of the injured is critical due to smoke inhalation, while the others are reported to be stable.
