Geneva, Jan. 10 -- Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said on Friday that Jan. 9 marked 1,000 days since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan, warning that the scale of suffering was staggering, with more than 21 million people currently estimated to be acutely food insecure.

Laerke said here at a regular press briefing that nearly 34 million people in Sudan now require humanitarian assistance, while the entire region continues to suffer from the spillover of the crisis.
