Guwahati, Dec. 21 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid a rich tribute to the 855 martyrs of the historical Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak, recently inaugurated by the Assam Government at Guwahati's Boragaon area.
Modi accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and several other ministers from the Assam cabinet arrived at the Swahid Smarak and paid floral tributes to the martyrs of the Assam movement.
Built to commemorate the 855 martyrs of Assam Movement, the Swahid Smarak (Martyrs' Column) is a monumental 55-meter tall statue and an underground roll of honour. It features a library cum archive auditorium, sculpture garden and more.
