Aizawl, Jan. 1 -- Mizoram ushered in the New Year without any serious law and order incidents, though widespread use of fireworks marked midnight celebrations across the state despite an official ban and repeated appeals by the Young Mizo Association (YMA).
Fireworks activity intensified from around 11.30 pm and continued past midnight, illuminating large parts of Aizawl and several other district headquarters. Similar scenes were reported from all 10 districts, underscoring the limited impact of the government's restrictions, which have struggled to curb the practice year after year.
Police detained a few intoxicated persons for brawls and creating public nuisance, but authorities said no major untoward incidents were reported. Hospitals...
