Aizawl, Nov. 21 -- Mizoram is presently sheltering 40,523 people displaced by conflict and persecution in neighbouring countries and states, according to officials of the state Home Department.

The figure includes refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Manipur.

Officials said 31,214 people from Myanmar are living across various districts of Mizoram after fleeing the military coup of February 2021 and the subsequent civil conflict, which intensified in early 2022. At one point, the number of Myanmar refugees in the state had surged past 50,000.
