Aizawl, June 17 -- Just when Mizoram appeared to be turning the tide against the ongoing African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, a sudden spike in pig deaths and culling has set off alarm bells in the southern part of the state.
After several days without casualties, there was a resurgence of the virus today, with Lunglei district-bordering Bangladesh-recording the highest number of fresh pig deaths.
Officials from the state's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department reported 61 deaths in total, with 32 from Lunglei and 29 from neighbouring Siaha district, which borders Myanmar and has been the epicentre of the current outbreak since it flared up again in mid-March.
