Dhaka, July 12 -- A brutal daylight killing in Old Dhaka has intensified political tensions in Bangladesh, with major parties trading accusations and positioning themselves ahead of a potential general election.

Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the murder, though no political links have been officially confirmed.

The victim, identified as 39-year-old scrap trader Chand Mia, locally known as Sohag, was bludgeoned to death with concrete blocks near Mitford Hospital on July 10, the Bangladesh Business Standard reported.

Graphic CCTV footage of the incident, widely circulated on social media, showed the brutal attack in full public view.
