Mumbai, Jan. 29 -- Political activity within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has intensified following the demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, with senior party leaders openly discussing succession including induction of Sunetra Pawar as the Dy. CM in his place, and a possible merger of the two NCP factions.

According to sources, the demand to appoint Sunetra Pawar as Ajit Pawar's political successor has gained momentum within the party. After Ajit Pawar's last rites were performed in Baramati on Thursday, senior NCP leaders, including party MP Praful Patel and cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal, reportedly met Sunetra Pawar and urged her to accept the post of Deputy Chief Minister.
