Belagavi, Dec. 8 -- Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre on Monday informed the Legislative Council that haemorrhagic septicaemia, a bacterial infection, was responsible for the deaths of 31 blackbucks last month.

The spate of deaths at Kittur Rani Chennamma Mini Zoo had raised serious concerns about zoo safety in Karnataka. Post-mortem examinations conducted by Animal Husbandry Department officials, with samples sent to the Veterinary Biological Institute, confirmed the deadly infection.

Out of 38 blackbucks infected, only seven survived. While quarantine protocols have been imposed, the incident has exposed vulnerabilities in zoo management, with critics dubbing existing safety measures "a paper tiger."Defending the administration, ...
