Durgapur, Aug. 20 -- A miner was killed after being washed away by a surge of water in an underground coal mine at Eastern Coalfields Ltd in Andal, in West Bengal's West Bardhaman district, officials said.

The mishap happened at No 3 pit of the mine, 600 feet below the ground when five workers were cutting chunks, and a portion of guard wall gave in, resulting in gushing of water in which Bibek Majhi, a Jharkhand resident, was swept away while four others managed to survive. They were on night duty.

The authorities early this morning deployed pumps to dewater the mine and rescued four miners and salvaged the body of the deceased.
