Bengaluru, Jan. 12 -- Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday mounted a strong attack on the BJP-led Centre, alleging that attempts to cut funds and weaken the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) revealed an anti-people mindset and a clear preference for corporate interests over the poor.
Speaking to the media here, Kharge said MNREGA was a rights-based law introduced to guarantee employment and food security to the rural poor. He recalled that the legislation, brought in during the UPA government under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was designed to ensure the right to work and to fill the stomachs of the poor.
