Chennai, April 25 -- In a announcement that wouod bring smiles in the faces of the farmers, Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan on Friday announced in the State Assembly that the sluice gates of the Mettur Dam will be opened for irrigation on the traditional date of June 12.

The announcement marks a crucial step in ensuring timely water supply for the kuruvai paddy cultivation in the Cauvery delta districts.

Water from the Mettur dam is the lifeline for farmers in the delta region to cultivate their crops.

As part of the preparations, the Minister said desilting works across 12 districts, spanning 5,021 km of irrigation canals, have been planned and are already in progress.
