Shillong, Oct. 12 -- A major tragedy was averted with the timely detection of a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday evening, police officials said on Sunday.

The IED, planted inside a bag, was found inside a compound located in front of the Meghalaya Rural Bank in the Umsning market at around 7.30 pm, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, the district police chief of Ri-Bhoi, said.

Simultaneously, the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) and a K-9 team were requisitioned, and upon assessing the abandoned bag, they confirmed the presence of explosives.

The IED was successfully diffused by BDDS.
