Shillong, Feb. 25 -- Meghalaya has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in India, with 10,293 infected persons in the state receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) as of January 2026, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla told the assembly on Wednesday.

"It is very unfortunate, but Meghalaya has the highest cases in India," Shylla said in response to queries during the Question Hour on Meghalaya's national position in HIV/AIDS.

However, Shylla said the government has already approved a Rs 25-crore five-year mission-mode programme to contain the alarming rise of HIV/AIDS cases.
