Shillong, Sept. 11 -- Meghalaya does not have the minimum required number of medical professionals even to run the basic government health care institutions, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Thursday.

Meghalaya as a whole has a 50 percent deficit of medical professionals in the civil and district hospitals, maternity and child health centres and others, the Chief Minister said in the course of his reply on short discussion on the Tura medical college in the assembly, which was moved by the Leader of the Opposition and Trinamool Congress, Dr. Mukul Sangma.

The Leader of Opposition was opposing the government's decision to partner with a private entity for the operation and management of Tura Medical College.
