Shillong, July 24 -- The Meghalaya High Court has sought a response from the Advocate General after a men's rights group challenged the State government's decision not to issue Scheduled Tribes (ST) certificates to tribal Khasis who adopt the surname of a father and to non-Khasi women who choose to adopt the surname of their Khasi husbands.

The men's rights organisation, Syngkhong Rympei Thymmai (SRT), has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Meghalaya High Court on the non-issuance of Scheduled Tribe certificates to Khasi who adopted "surnames of either from the father or the mother and the practice of adopting husband's surnames by non-Khasi wife."
