Shillong, Feb. 10 -- The death toll in the illegal coal mine explosion at the Mynsyngat-Thangsko area in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district rose to 28, with one more person succumbing to his injuries, officials said.

Raju Tamang (34), who had suffered deep burn injuries, died at the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital, Shillong, on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Manish Kumar, the district magistrate of East Jaintia Hills, said.

In a late-night press statement, Kumar also announced the closure of the search and rescue operation at the mining accident site.
